Breaking Down The Brew: Starbucks Teavana Tea Bags

August 5, 2022

Starbucks now has plenty of options for tea drinkers as well and this is all thanks to the Starbucks Teavana tea bags. Curious to know just which options are available to you? Well, here is your introduction to all the cold and hot tea options on the menu!

What Brand of Tea Bags Does Starbucks Use?

Starbucks stores almost exclusively use Teavana tea for all of its true and herbal teas. This is why the company is able to produce such well blended teas that you will be hardpressed to find elsewhere.

What Teavana Tea Options Can You Find at Starbucks?

There are seven Teavana tea blends for you to try:

Black Teas

Here are the teas with black tea as a base.

Teavana Royal English Breakfast Tea

If you are looking for a strong and plain black tea, then the Royal English breakfast tea is your best option. This full bodied black tea consists of high-grown, full-leaf black teas from India and Sri Lanka.

The ingredients for the Royal English breakfast tea are simply stated as being a blend of black teas.

The tea bags can be used to whip up a Royal English Breakfast tea latte with milk as well as an iced Royal Breakfast tea latte. It is also available as an iced black tea.

Teavana Earl Grey Tea

The ingredients for this Teavana Earl Grey tea bag are bergamot essence and lavender flowers. This results in a delightfully well-balanced brew that boasts a light citrus taste and a hint of floral undertones.

Though well-known as a plain hot tea, Earl Grey tea can be turned into a London Fog latte with steamed milk. The bergamot and lavender work surprisingly well with this addition. It is also available as an iced version.

Teavana Chai Tea

This is yet another favored Starbucks Teavana drink. Here, the black tea is infused with warming spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and ginger.

In reality, the ingredient list for chai drinks is more complex. It consists of black tea, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, star anise, cloves, and cardamom essence.

Green Teas

As with the black tea, the Starbucks Teavana green tea drinks consist of a blend of green teas.

Teavana Emperor's Clouds & Mist Tea

This is the only Starbucks Teavana that consists of green tea and nothing else. It is a bit different from what most people associate with this type of tea, although it is certainly delicious. The light, toasty and sweet notes accompanying the green tea sets it apart.

Teavana Jade Citrus Mint Tea

The Jade Citrus Mint tea is a fan favorite among Starbucks tea drinkers. The green tea blend is combined with notes of spearmint, lemongrass, and lemon verbena. The Jade Citrus Mint ingredient list also contains natural flavoring.

The Teavana Jade Citrus Mint tea is used as a base for another popular hot tea drink known as Honey Citrus Mint tea. In fact, the Jade Citrus Mint tea is also used for all the iced green tea beverages as well. This is just as delicious hot and cold.

Herbal Teas

There are two herbal teas available as Starbucks Teavana brews.

Teavana Peach Tranquility Tea

This herbal infusion is often ordered and it isn't difficult to see why. The Peach Tranquility is an absolute explosion of flavor, with notes of peach, pineapple, chamomile, and rosehip creating a sweet and floral taste.

The ingredients for the Peach Tranquility consist of apple pieces, candied pineapple pieces, rosehip peels, peach pieces, chamomile flowers, lemon verbena, and artificial flavoring.

Teavana Mint Majesty Tea

This is an ultra-refreshing drink. The aptly named Mint Majesty consists of spearmint leaves, peppermint leaves, and lemon verbena.

A Note About Starbucks Chai Drinks

There is something that you should know about the Starbucks chai Teavana tea. Only the regular hot drink is brewed with the chai tea bag.

All the other drinks - chai tea latte, iced chai drinks, etc. are all made from a Starbucks chai concentrate. This is a strong liquid that works as a base for the drinks. This chai concentrate is pre sweetened and isn't as healthy as the Teavana tea bag.

What You Should Know About Starbucks Teavana Teas

Here are some things that you should know about these Starbucks tea bags:

Pyramid Shaped Bags

Unlike regular tea bags, the Teavana ones are larger and pyramid shaped. This is done for two reasons. First, it allows for larger, higher quality ingredients such as green and black tea leaves, flowers for Earl Grey tea, herbal ingredients for Jade Citrus mint tea, Peach Tranquility, and Mint Majesty.

The larger tea bags also allow for a more efficient tea and herbal infusion. A greater amount of the flavor is transferred to the water, resulting in the perfect cup.

Zero Calories

As long as you don't add any other ingredients to the Starbucks Teavana blend, there are no calories in any of the tea offerings. This is even true for beverages such as Peach Tranquility that uses candied fruit and peach pieces!

Therefore, if you are looking for healthier options, sticking to one of these lovely beverages is the way to go.

Caffeine Content

It should be noted that Starbucks doesn't have any decaf tea on its menu. This means that if any Teavana blend contains green tea or black tea, it contains caffeine. This includes Earl Grey and Jade Citrus Mint tea.

This content can differ based on just how much green tea or black tea is in the drink, though. The caffeine content will also vary by size. The larger drinks will contain more.

If you order herbal tea, on the other hand, you won't be getting any caffeine at all. This is because Peach Tranquility and Mint Majesty don't contain any true teas.

How Long Should Teavana Bags Be Steeped For?

This all depends on what is in the blend. On average, green tea is the most delicate option, even when it is combined with other components. This is why you won't need to steep Emperor's Mist and Jade Citrus Mint for longer than 2 minutes at a time.

Black tea is more robust than green, but even then you shouldn't steep it for longer than 3 to 5 minutes. Steeping these tea bags for too long will result in a bitter and unpleasant flavor.

The herbal tea from Teavana is the most resilient option. In most cases, steeping the tea bags for an extended period of time doesn't cause too much change in the natural flavors of the drink.

The good news is that Teavana provides detailed instructions for all of its teabags. This includes instructions on water temperature as well as steep time. If you want to get the best possible flavor, always follow these recommendations.

How are Starbucks Teavana Drinks Brewed?

If you are ordering a plain drink, then hot water is poured into a cup size of your choice, and the tea bags are added. Bear in mind, that for such drinks that you are in charge of removing the tea bags in a timely manner.

As mentioned, the green tea bags do need to be taken out sooner than the rest. Another option is to keep taking a sip of your drink every few seconds. This will ensure that it is brewed to your desired strength.

If milk or other ingredients are being added, then the hot water is only added to the halfway point. With blended or mixed drinks, the barista will handle the brewing process for you.

Can I buy Teavana Tea Bags at Starbucks?

Many people don't realize that Starbucks actually acquired the Teavana brand in 2012. Five years later, the company decided to shut down all its storefronts. However, it may be possible to buy your favorite Teavana tea at your local Starbucks store.

Even if you can't, Starbucks has now made its brews available in numerous grocery stores. A quick trip here should be enough to stock up on the available flavors.

You should also know that Teavana has far more flavors than just the ones that are available on the Starbucks menu. Therefore, if you are trying to expand your tea horizons, you may want to check out the other options on the market.

This is what you need to know about Starbucks Teavana drinks. Just a few tea bags can be used to make a whole host of drinks!
